New York Botanical Garden

Inspired by Kew Gardens during a visit to England in 1889, botanists Dr Nathaniel Lord and his wife Elizabeth Britton returned to New York determined to create something similar.

In only two years, with a deep gorge of the Bronx River and 16ha of original woodland providing special features, the basics were completed. Today, 11 splendid galleries form the Enid Haupt Conservatory, with orchids, ferns, palms, cacti and flowers of the tropics.

Another building on the 100ha site is the 1840 Lorillard Snuff Mill, where tobacco was ground for snuff, with the petals of roses growing nearby contributing to the blend. The museum building houses a herbarium, with many thousands of dried plants. There is also a library and a garden shop where visitors can obtain a guide to the gardens.
